Our History

A Veterinary Hospital was built on this site in 1958 by Dr. J.R. Brooks.

At that time, it functioned as an equine hospital for Jefferson Downs Race Track located across the street at the present site of Lafreniere Park. David Drive was a dirt road which served as the "backside" of the track.

In 1990, the clinic was purchased by Dr. Steve Slaton and has changed and grown over the years into the small animal veterinary hospital known as Pet Care Center. After many years of planning, in 2006, the decision to build a new facility was set into place. The next two years brought much planning, construction, and two new partners: Dr. Erica Brooks and Dr. Michelle Boudreaux. In the years since, the David Drive location has become a full service 24-hour Emergency Hospital. In addition, Pet Care Center has expanded by opening multiple locations throughout the Greater New Orleans area.

The first satellite clinic opened is located in the beautiful French Quarter, on the corner of Esplanade and Burgundy. The building that this clinic occupies was built in 1830, and is listed on the National Historic Register. Property has continuously functioned as a veterinary hospital since 1887. Our second satellite clinic opened in Chalmette in 2011. Tragically, this property, which also had served as a veterinary hospital for 40 years, was devastated by Hurricane Katrina, and remained vacant and in disrepair for many years. Pet Care Center purchased the property, and restored it to its original purpose. It has been operating as a veterinary clinic ever since. In the summer of 2013, in conjunction with Jefferson Feed, a local feed store which has served the New Orleans area for over 60 years, Pet Care Center-Midcity was born. This boutique clinic operates inside the feed store and is located on the corner of N. Carrollton and Bienville. The summer of 2017 brought us our fourth satellite clinic. This clinic is located in historic downtown Covington, on the banks of the Tchefuncte River. Covington is a very quaint and somewhat rural community located just north of the city of New Orleans. Our fifth location is a venture with our friends at Pet Care Affordable Veterinary Clinic, located inside Jefferson Feed on Jefferson Highway. Acadian Affordable offers low cost spay/neuters and vaccines. Through this clinic, we are able to support local humane groups, such as the Jefferson Parish SPCA, rescue organizations, as well as, members in our community who may need a little help taking care of their pets. We consider it an honor to be able to do our part in supporting a local community that has been so wonderful to us. Our sixth, and most recent location is located at 1935 Gause Blvd. in Slidell, Louisiana. We have upgraded this hospital to include to state-of-the-art technology and we are committed to providing quality care to the pets of Slidell. Our Slidell location's services include boarding, grooming, surgery, radiographs, and sick & wellness visits.

With such a tremendous growth in facilities and services, we have also added three new partners at Pet Care Center. Dr. Amelie Lanaux in Mid-City, Dr. Claire Scott in the French Quarter, and Dr. Julie Wheeler in Chalmette.

We are truly humbled by the support from the communities we serve. Thank you for allowing us to grow!
